A 63-year-old farmer was sentenced to triple life term today for killing the 62-year-old mother of his son-in-law and trying to kill his father for their refusal to return his land that he had given to them earlier.

District Mahila Court Judge N Thirunavukkarasu sentenced Thangamuthu to triple life term in the 2014 case of murder, attempt to murder and trespassing.

All the three life sentences, however, would run concurrently, the judge ruled.

According to the prosecution, Thangamuthu of Kodumanal village of Erode district had transferred three acres of land to his son-in-law Arunachalam a few years back.

He, however, subsequently wanted Arunachalam to return his land and went to his house and sought return of the land but the latter refused.

Thangamuthu again went to his son-in-law's house on March 21, 2014, and picked up a quarrel with his parents - Karuppusamy, 68 and Valliammal, 62 over the issue.

In a fit of rage, Thangamuthu drew his sickle and hacked Valliammal, killing her on the spot.

Karuppusamy also suffered grievous cuts while trying to save his wife.

The judge also ordered Thangamuthu to pay Rs 30,000, spent on treatment of Karuppusamy.
