The 37-year-old actress auditioned for the role of Smith's love interest, gossip columnist Sara Melas, in the film back in 2004 and she was crushed to learn she did not get the part, reported Contactmusic.
But Longoria says things worked out for the best, as the next day, she booked her gig as Gabrielle Solis on the hit television drama 'Desperate Housewives', a show which ultimately launched her career.
"I auditioned for "Hitch"... With Eva Mendes and she ended up getting it and I didn't and the next day I got 'Desperate Housewives'. So had I gotten that part in Hitch, I would not have been on this amazing run," she said.
The Golden Globe-winning series, which premiered in America in the autumn of 2004, is set to wrap up its eighth and final season on Sunday.
