Amazon is planning to develop a series based on 1997 sci-fi horror film "Event Horizon".

According to Variety, the streamer has roped in Adam Wingard to direct and executive produce the series.

Wingard is best known for films such as "You're Next, Death Note", and "Blair Witch". He is currently working on "Godzilla vs. Kong", which is scheduled to be released in 2020.

"Event Horizon", directed by Paul WS Anderson, follows a crew of astronauts sent on a rescue mission after a missing spaceship, the Event Horizon, spontaneously appears in orbit around Neptune.

During the search for signs of life, the rescue crew learns that the Event Horizon was a test bed for an experimental engine that opened a rift in the space time continuum and left our universe entirely, allowing a hostile entity to possess the ship.

Despite being headlined by the likes of Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan and Joely Richardson, the film was both a critical and a commercial failure.

But since its release, the movie has amassed a cult following among the fans and is remembered as one of the best films of Anderson's career.

The series adaptation will be yet another collaboration between Amazon and Paramount Television. They previously came together for "Jack Ryan" series.

Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin, who produced the original film, will also executive produce the show alongside Wingard and Jeremy Platt.
