A former police inspector attached to the Maharashtra ATS was today convicted in a bribery case by a special Prevention of Corruption Act court and sentenced to two years' imprisonment in a bribery case.
The court convicted Arun Khanvilkar and his two associates -- Chetan Desai and Sanjay Kakkar -- for taking money from Manoj Singh in return for not booking him in a fake case.
It also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on Khanvilkar and Rs 50,000 on Kakkar and Desaid and jailed them for 18 months.

Khanvilkar had then demanded Rs 20 lakh and after negotiation, the amount was brought down to Rs 10 lakh.
Singh paid Rs 5 lakh and later filed a case with ACB. On February 4, 2010, Desai was arrested while accepting money from Singh on behalf of Khanvilkar.
On the basis of Desai's interrogation, Khanvilkar and Kakkar were arrested the next day.
During the trial, public prosecutor Sheela Jamdhar examined seven witnesses to prove the case.
