Amar Pal Sharma, a former BSP MLA from Sahibabad, surrendered in a court here today in connection with the case of murder of BJP leader Gajendra Bhati.

Sharma surrendered before additional chief judicial magistrate (II) Abhishek Kumar Srivastav, who sent him to 14- day judicial custody, according to the prosecution.

Bhati was gunned down by two armed assailants in Khoda on September 2. Another BJP local functionary, Balbir Chauhan, was injured in the incident.

A few days after the killing, the police arrested Narendra Gurjar, alias Fauji, and Raju Pehalwan. The duo told police that Sharma had given them a contract of Rs 10 lakh to eliminate his political rival Gajendra Bhati.

Sharma later joined the Congress after he was expelled from the BSP.

After a case was registered against Sharma, he had moved the Allahabad High Court seeking a stay on his arrest. The high court gave him three-week time till September 20 to surrender.

However, he had been on the run.
