Former chief of Chandrapur Municipal Council, Beeta Ramteke has been sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment by a local court for taking bribe to issue work order to a private company about ten years back.

Her husband Ghanshyam Ramteke has also been sentenced to one-year RI in connection with the case.

Beeta had sought Rs 10,000 in July 2004 from one Shitala Mata Seva Sahakari Sanstha that provided manpower to clean the city and had started the work.

But the civic body did not clear the bills.

When Sanstha president Kavita Mahatav sought payment of the bill, Bita demanded Rs 10,000 for the same.

Subsequently, Kavita approached the local Anti-Corruption Bureau.

Beeta directed Kavita to hand over the amount to Ghanshyam. The ACB then laid a trap and caught Ghanshyam while taking the bribe from Kavita.

Later, the ACB charge-sheeted Ramtekes in the case.

Special court Judge A S Bhaisare in Chandrapur, after finding them guilty of the offence, on April 11 sentenced Beeta Ramteke to two-year RI along with a fine of Rs 1,500.

The court also convicted Ghanshyam Ramteke in the case and awarded him one-year RI and a fine of Rs 1,000.
