Former CPI(M) MLA from Malda (Reserved) constituency Subhendu Choudhury died today after prolonged ailments.

Choudhury, who had been elected from the seat five times since 1977, had been suffering from cardiac and old age-related ailments and intermittently admitted to hospital for past six months, his family said.

Choudhury (77) left behind two sons and a daughter.

A pioneering member of the cooperative movement in the district, he was the three-time Chairman of Central Cooperative Bank of the district.

"We will miss his guidance in the present economic crisis situation," a bank member said.

Leaders of different political parties condoled the death of Chowdhury and placed wreaths as the body was kept in party office.
