A former Congress district unit president was arrested here today for allegedly making threat calls to a woman and trying to extort money from her.

Former Shravasti district unit president of Congress Yogendra Mani Tripathi was arrested for making threat calls to Sadhna Srivastava, the district coordinator of Nehru Yuva Kendra here, police said.

According to Superintendent of Police Mohit Gupta, on December 19 Sadhna had complained to Kotwali dehat police that Tripathi was making threat calls and sending SMSes demanding Rs 50,000.

He had threated her of dire consequences if she failed to deliver the money, the cop said.

When Tripathi was questioned about this, he had told the police that his mobile phone had gone missing and he had informed the Gilaula police station in this regard, Gupta said.

Tripathi's claim was, however, found to be incorrect as the location of the mobile phone matched with that of Tripathi during investigations following which he was arrested this afternoon, the SP said.

Triparhi had also contested an assembly poll from Bahraich Sadar on Congress ticket in the past.
