Senior DMK leader and former state minister Thangam Thennarasu was today granted anticipatory bail by the Madras High Court bench here in an election- related case filed in Virudhunagar district in the run-up to the May 16 assembly polls.

Justice V M Velumani granted the bail and directed the DMK leader to cooperate with the police as and when required.

The petitioner and his party members were charged with carrying out election campaign without valid permission on May 12 last.

Thennarasu submitted that cases had been registered by the police against him under IPC sections 143,188 and Tamil Nadu Nuisance Act. He contented that the charges against him were frivolous and claimed that he was innocent.
