A special CBI court today sentenced former India player and East Bengal football team's technical director Subhash Bhowmick to three-year imprisonment in a 2005 bribery case, when he worked in the central excise department.
The Kolkata court also slapped a fine of Rs 2 lakh on Bhowmick. He, however, was granted bail on medical grounds.
In December 2005, CBI's anti-corruption cell had caught Bhowmick red-handed taking a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh from a businessman after promising him a refund on his excise duty being the then superintendent of the excise department.
Bhowmick had apparently demanded a bribe of Rs 4 lakh, which was finally settled at Rs 1.5 lakh after negotiations.
He was charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
