The announcement about his rejoining the party was expected anytime, a senior party leader said.

A five-time MLA and minister in Virbhadra Singh government from 2003 to 2005, Mankotia had resigned from the cabinet in the wake of downsizing of the ministry and turned a bitter critic of Singh.

He caused embarrassment to Congress by releasing the audio CD, allegedly containing conversation of Singh and his wife Pratibha Singh about some deals in May 2007 on the eve of Hamirpur Lok Sabha by-elections and later left the party to head the state unit of BSP.

The BSP suffered humiliating defeat in the elections and even Mankotia lost from Dharamsala constituency.

Later, he resigned from the BSP and announced "political sanyas" and floated a non-political outfit but continued attacking Singh from time to time.
