Ex-janpad panchayat official gets 5-yr RI for accepting bribe

A court here has sentenced a former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a janpad panchayat to five years of rigorous imprisonment for taking a bribe of Rs 3,000 from an anganwadi worker to cancel her transfer order in 2011.

Special Judge (anti-corruption) and Additional District Judge Garima Sharma yesterday awarded the five-year jail term to SR Bairagi (47) after he was found guilty of taking bribe, Additional Public prosecutor AK Shrivastav said today.

The court alsoslapped afineof Rs 80,000 on Bairagi and saidafailuretopaytheamountwould attract an additional three-year jail term for the accused, he added.

On August 2, 2011, Bairagi, who was posted as the CEO of Pusaur Janpad Panchayat in Raigarh district, was caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau sleuths of Bilaspur for accepting abribeof Rs 3,000 from anganwadi worker (Kauataal village) Guruwari Sidar to cancel her transfer order, Shrivastav said.
 

The chargesheet in the case was filed in 2013 and Bairagi faced charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act, he added.

Bairagi is currently posted as Assistant Project Officer in Zila Panchayat, Bastar.
