Alleging that he was feeling suffocated in the Congress, former Punjab MLA Ajit Singh Shant today quit the party and joined the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

"I was treated in the party (Congress) as if I am a refugee from Pakistan. I was feeling suffocated," Shant told reporters here.

Shant was first elected to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha as an Independent in 2002. Later, he joined the Congress.

In the 2012 Punjab assembly polls, he lost to SAD's Bibi Rajwinder Kaur.
