A 75-year-old ex-serviceman was charred to death when a fire broke out in his apartment at Gudimalkapur here this morning, police said.
S Mallikarjun Rao was sleeping in a room with the door bolted from the inside. His wife, who was in another room, had got up to make tea, they said.
She noticed flames from her husband's room and alerted neighbours. They informed fire and rescue service personnel, who rushed to the spot and doused the flames, police said
However Rao had died by then, they said
Fire Department personnel ruled out a short circuit and said they suspected a burning cigarette might have fallen on books in Rao's room, triggering the fire.
Investigations are on to find the exact cause of the blaze, police added.
