Expelled Trinamool Congress strongman and former (RPT former) MLA Arabul Islam was arrested today from the New Town area, the emerging satellite township near Kolkata, for his alleged involvement in an extortion case, police said.
"We have arrested Arabul Islam from New Town Police Station area. He has been booked under attempt to murder charges," a senior officer of the Bidhannagar Police told PTI.
"A complaint was registered with us alleging that Arabul went to an under-construction project site here on April 24 just before the election day and demanded money. There Arabul had beaten up people and threatened them. He had also hurled bombs before leaving the place," the officer said.
Arabul, who had often put the party in embarrassing situations, was expelled by the TMC in October last year after two persons were killed following an intra-party clash at Bhangor in South 24-Parganas district in the same month.
