The Jammu and Kashmir Excise Department sleuths today foiled an alleged bid to smuggle around 14,000 kg of polythene bags at the Lakhanpur inter-state toll plaza in Kathua district.

A truck was intercepted at the toll plaza and checking was conducted by the excise department sleuths which led to the recovery of approximately 14,000 kg of polythene bags, Deputy Excise Commissioner Ashish Kumar Gupta said.

Polythene bags are banned in Jammu and Kashmir.

The polythene bags had been disguised as flour bags to be smuggled into the state, Gupta said.

The truck driver has been arrested and further investigation is underway, he said.
