An Executive Council member of Aligarh Muslim University has alleged that law and order on the campus is "very alarming" and some other "irregularities" are also happening there.

The member, Waseem Ahmed, has met President Pranab Mukherjee, who is Visitor of the university, and brought to his notice such issues.

"I am a nominee of the President of India on the Executive Council of the University. During my recent visits to the University, I found that despite the hype of development, the situation on the ground was very bad," he said in his memorandum to the President.

"Law and order situation is very alarming. There was the daylight murder of a student on the campus in September. There is open use of firearms...," he added.

Ahmed, a former MP, has also alleged "irregularities" in admission to various courses during sessions 2014-15 and 2015-16.

He said teachers have also been "restive", demanding that the UGC norms for promotion and appointment and research norms should be implemented in both letter and spirit.

"The President gave me a patient hearing, read the attached memorandum and assured me that he would look into the matter and talk to the Minister concerned," Ahmed said later.
