UGC Vice Chairman H Devraj today said expansion of the higher education system in India is accompanied by several problems like proliferation of sub-standard institutions, dilution of quality and non maintenance of the academic calendar.
"Education departments should put in tremendous efforts to rectify the situation so that accountability is fixed at various levels and students are motivated to go for quality education," he said.
The problems were many in expansion of higher education in India and these included mushrooming of sub-standard institutions, a dilution in quality and non maintenance of the academic calendar, he said.

Devraj said universities would be strong only when there was complete freedom to inquire and explore boldly and express oneself freely. "Universities should provide highest standard of scholarship and integrity," he said.
He lauded Kalasalingam university for offering a special B.Tech programme for speech and hearing impaired persons and said it was a unique programme in Asia.
