Expressing serious concern over disruption and damages caused by the snowfall across the Valley, CPI(M) today asked the government to expedite restoration of essential services immediately.
"We express serious concern over disruption and damages caused by the snowfall across the Valley especially in South Kashmir. The government should expedite restoration of essential services immediately and assess the damages caused to farmers and orchardists in districts like Kulgam, Pulwama, Anantnag and Shopian", CPI(M) State Secretary Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami told reporters here.
Tarigami stressed that the administration should restore power supplies in the areas which remained cut off due to snow and ensure adequate supplies of ration, fuel and other edible commodities in such areas without any delay.
"The government must address the problem of frequent power breakdowns in Kashmir Valley. Efforts should made to restore power supply as soon as possible in areas which are still reeling under darkness," the Kulgam MLA said.
He said despite passing of several days, the situation continues to be grim in many rural areas.
"The ongoing board and university examinations demand improvement in the power scenario. The electricity has to be restored on war footing to save the future of the student community," Tarigami said.
With the rise in water discharge of rivers, the government must revise the power curtailment schedule, he added.
The CPI(M) MLA said people in the Valley had been already bearing the brunt of hard winter supplemented by the scarcity of essential commodities and other daily needs.
Tarigami urged for sensitising the administrative machinery to come to the rescue of the affected people and make immediate efforts to restore the essential services.
Referring to losses caused to horticulture, he demanded immediate compensation to the affected farmers and orchardists.
"Thousands of fruit and other trees are reported to have been uprooted due to latest snowfall. There should be immediate assessment of losses suffered by the farmers on account of this snowfall," he demanded.
On water-logging in various parts of Srinagar and other areas of Kashmir, Tarigami asked the government to expedite dewatering in the inundated areas at the earliest.
