A court here today granted anticipatory bail to expelled CPI(M) leader Ritabrata Banerjee in a case filed by a woman, alleging that he had offered her money to hush up their relationship.

The woman had filed another case claiming that Banerjee, a Rajya Sabha member, had established a physical relationship with her on the promise of marriage. Banerjee had secured anticipatory bail in that case on November 4.

Today's case came up for hearing in the court of District and Sessions Judge Sudeb Mitra, who granted the relief to Banerjee.

The woman, a resident of Balurghat in South Dinajpur district, had lodged a police complaint last month, alleging that Banerjee had established a physical relationship with her at his New Delhi residence after promising marriage, but later backtracked.

She had also alleged that Banerjee had offered her money to hush up the matter.

The police have booked the Rajya Sabha MP under various sections of the IPC.

Banerjee, on the other hand, had claimed that the woman's allegations were false. He too had lodged a police complaint in Kolkata, demanding action against the woman for "maligning" his image.

The CPI(M) had, on September 15, expelled Banerjee for "gross anti-party activities".
