A six-member committee has been set up to ascertain the cause of the deafening noise and mild tremor like incident in parts of the district on January 14 which triggered panic among the people.

The committee headed by Anna University Professor Rajaratnam visited Rasipuram and other places that witnessed the happening around 12.30 pm, District Collector V Dakshinamourthy said today.

In Tiruchengode, glass panes of a building came crashing down under the impact of the noise.

It was initially suspected that it could have been caused by supersonic aircraft, but enquiries with officials at Coimbatore and Tiruchirappalli airports showed no such flight had taken place on January 14 in the region.

The Collector said the committee would submit a report to the government after completing the tour of the affected villages.
