A 58-year-old man in US was seriously injured when a toilet exploded in his face, leaving him so scared that he now uses a rope to flush from safe distance.

Michel Pierre received severe shrapnel injuries as shards pierced his face, arms and legs after he pulled the handle while testing water pressure in his apartment in a 19-storey Brooklyn building, according to the Daily News.

The wounds from "the porcelain bomb" were so deep that he required 30 stitches. The incident left him so traumatised that he now uses a rope to flush from a safe distance behind the toilet door.

The information and technology specialist is one of the four tenants injured in the bowl blast which occurred when Pierre tried to check if the pressurised flush-valve toilet was working after the water had been turned off in the building while a plumbing contractor installed a backflow prevention valve.

Pierre plans to file a lawsuit against the management of the building so that he can paid compensation.
