With Parliament slated to honour the architect of the Constitution B R Ambedkar in the Winter Session, CPI(M) today asked the government to implement his "unfinished agenda" by adopting a law to extend quota provisions to the private sector.
The party's Politburo urged the government to use the first two days of the session, earmarked for the purpose, "for carrying on the unfinished agenda and vision of Dr Ambedkar on the issue of social justice."
"The government must come prepared with legislative business" on enacting a law to extend the constitutional provision of reservation to the private sector, legislate on the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Bill 2015 pending before the Rajya Sabha and enact laws providing statutory status to the Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe Sub-Plan, the party said in a statement.
"Though this is not a special session, as the CPI(M) had demanded, these two days must be utilised for ensuring that the attention of the entire country is focussed on this shameful scourge of Indian society - inequality on the basis of birth and descent - and on the urgent need to take comprehensive and strong measures to eliminate it," it said.
"This is the least that the Indian Parliament can do to carry forward Dr Ambedkar's vision. This is the best way to observe this anniversary," the CPI(M) said.
