An extremist, allegedly involved in extortions, has been arrested in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district of Telangana, police said today.

A Narayana Swamy alias Madhu, state committee member of CPI-ML New Democracy, was arrested yesterday after police teams launched combing operations following rise in extortion cases, they said.

Police seized one rifle along with 15 'live rounds', three kit bags and party literature from his possession.

During combing operation near the hillocks of Gorrebanda thanda, a police party noticed a five-member armed group "clad in jungle patch uniform," a police release said.

They started running when police asked them to surrender. After a brief chase, police apprehended one of them who disclosed his identity as 'Madhu', the release said.

Madhu was earlier involved in more than 20 cases including exchange of fire with police, killing civilians and extortions, among others, police said.

He was arrested in July last year, but secured bail.

As per the party's directions, he again went underground to strengthen the organisation and allegedly started extorting money from contractors.
