The project is an initiative of Niramaya, an NGO.

Of total nearly 24 million world blind population, nearly one third (18 million) are in India, the NGO president T N Ahooja told reporters here.

People getting blind due to refractive error (an eye disorder in which people gradually lose vision) accounts for three million in the country, he said.

Around 15 to 20 percent of these 3 million are children below the age of 15 years, claimed Ahooja, whose NGO has been running eye donation centre in south Haryana for the last 10 years.

The doctors at the bus, which would be flagged off officially on August 25, would examine the eyes of rural people and provide medicines, spectacles and all necessary help on the spot, he said.
