Eyeing Purvanchali voters, Kejriwal to address rally at Burari

In run-up to the MCD polls, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will address a public meeting at Burari, which is dominated by Purvanchalis who played a major role in AAP winning the 2015 Assembly polls.

He is expected to address two-three dozen public meetings to garner votes for his party. The AAP has 12 Purvanchali MLAs and it has deployed them all in campaigning for the MCD polls.

The CM addressing rally in the area assumes significance in the wake of desertion by Purvanchali party volunteers who were upset over ticket distribution.

The party is also trying to keep its Purvanhali voter-base intact as the JD(U) is also contesting MCD polls with the focus on these voters.

The BJP is also trying to woo the Purvanchali voters and has appointed popular Bhopuri actor-singer and north-east Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari as Delhi unit president.

A section of AAP leaders are also believed to have joined the Yogendra Yadav-led Swaraj India party, sources in the AAP indicated.

"Some have decided not to participate in the campaign work (of AAP) while some have shifted allegiance to other parties. Many volunteers were unhappy with ticket distribution," a leader of AAP's Purvanchal wing claimed.

A win in the MCD polls will strengthen AAP's hold on Delhi and it will be presented by the party as vote for the Arvind Kejriwal dispensation. The party is hard-selling "achievements" of the Delhi government during its campaign.
