Battling a severe civic crisis in the city, the Karnataka government today said it was considering seeking central funds for disaster relief, following unprecedented rains.
Stating this here, Minister for Bengaluru Development K J George told reporters that the government would seek the help of the Union ministers from Bengaluru to get the central funds.
He was speaking after inaugurating an online social media centre, an initiative of his department, to tackle the day- to-day civic problems of the citizens.
The minister said the damage due to the rains had been estimated at Rs 1,650 crore till September.
Incessant torrential rains in the recent days have led to a civic mess in the city with the civic body, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), struggling to cope with it.
Mishaps due to ubiquitous potholes and rains have claimed 10 lives in the city, triggering sharp attacks from the opposition parties against the Siddaramaiah government for not addressing civic woes.
George claimed that 12,000 of the 24,000 potholes in the city had been filled up and added that the work for the remaining would be completed within this week.
He said it had been proposed to construct one lakh houses to accommodate those who would be displaced by a drive to clear the storm water drains.
The social media centre would cater to the citizens, George said, adding that they could register their grievances regarding various civic agencies such as the BBMP, Bangalore Development Authority, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) at the centre.
The complaints would be forwarded to the agencies concerned and the nodal officers would work actively to get the problems resolved, he said.
"I would also monitor continuously so that the grievances are redressed," the minister added.
