Facing crop loss and mounting debt, a farmer allegedly committed suicide near here today, police said.

Bhukya Mathya, a tribal, allegedly consumed pesticide at his house in Kumarikunta village under A Konduru mandal in Krishna district, they said.

He was immediately rushed to a hospital by his family members, but succumbed on the way, said A Konduru Police Sub-Inspector Yesubu.

The 32-year-old was allegedly depressed after he suffered losses in cotton crop. He had raised the crop on his own one acre of land and three acres taken on lease, but the yield was low. He took nearly Rs 3 lakh in loans from private moneylenders, but was unable to repay them, he said.

District revenue and police officials later visited Mathya's house.
