Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today welcomed the Union Textile Ministry's nod for construction of a memorial for Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar at Indu Mills land here saying the decision will expedite the process.

"We are satisfied (with) and welcome the decision taken by the Ministry of Textiles regarding the construction of a memorial for Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. This decision will now pave the way for speedy construction of a magnificent memorial of Ambedkar," Fadnavis said here.

Union Textile Ministry, in a press release, stated that a befitting memorial for Dr Ambedkar should be built at the Indu Mills compound.

"Based on the request of the government of Maharashtra, it has been decided that a befitting memorial would be set up, for which details are being worked out in consultation with the state government," the release stated.

The Dalit organisations in the state have been demanding for long that the land of the defunct mill in central Mumbai be handed over for Ambedkar's memorial.
