Fake currency racket busted in TN

With the arrest of a 63-year old man on the charge of circulating fake currency, police today claimed to have busted a counterfeit racket, the second in the last two months in the district.

Abdulrahman, involved in selling foreign goods, was arrested from Keezhakarai bus stand locality and high-quality fake currency in the denomination of Rs 500 seized from him, Q Branch Police Inspector Kennedy said.

This is the second fake currency racket unearthed in the coastal district. On August 2 last, police have arrested six persons, part of a 16-member gang allegedly involved in smuggling fake Indian currency in the denomination of Rs 1,000 from Sri Lanka and circulating in the district.
 

During interrogation, Abdulrahman told police that he received the fake notes, the texture and appearance of which looked very genuine, from a man, who belonged to Andhra Pradesh and doing business at Burma Bazar in Chennai.

A search was on to nab the other members of the gang, Police added.

Incidentally, Abdulrahman had been convicted in a drug smuggling case along with a Sri Lankan woman refugee in 2006 and served prison term of six years, police said.
