The city police arrested a fake IAS officer named Pendala Ramesh Naidu for allegedly duping unemployed youth by promising them jobs in various government departments, police sources said here today.

The 40-year-old Ramesh Naidu, a native of Srikakulam district and an MSc (Geography) graduate from Andhra University, has been residing at the posh East Point Colony area in Vizag for the past few years posing as an IAS officer.

Allegedly, he duped several youth to the tune of Rs 3 crore.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order, Zone-I) C M Trivikram Varma told reporters that based on a complaint lodged by one A Siva Kumar, who was allegedly duped by Ramesh Naidu to the tune of Rs 12 lakh by promising him a supervisor's job at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, the police registered a case against Naidu at the III-Town police station on March 19.

Later, 13 more duped youth approached the police, he said.

The DCP said that so far 14 duped youth have approached police from whom Naidu collected Rs 73 lakh.

He said that Naidu was connected to some IAS and IPS officers in Andhra Pradesh and some low ranking police officials of other states.

"We are trying to get more clues. We have registered cases against him under Section 420 and Section 506 (II) of the Indian Penal Code, and we are investigating the case," the DCP said.
