Families had to be evacuated from low lying areas of Surat, after one person died in a wall collapse in Jhagadia in Bharuch, due to heavy rains lashing South Gujarat and Central Gujarat today, district authorities said.
Heavy rains in Surat city forced the district administration to shift 89 families from low-lying areas to safer places, the officials said.
"Eighty nine families residing in low-lying areas of Surat city have been shifted to a school in Adajan area and provided with basic facilities there," Surat District Collector J Shivhare told PTI.

Meanwhile, one person died in a wall collapse today in Jhagadia in Bharuch, the district collector informed.
"A 22-year-old man died in a wall collapse in Bharuch district's Jhagadia taluka," Bharuch collector Avantika Singh told PTI.
Surat Collector Shivhare said that less rain over the upper and lower catchment areas of the Ukai Dam on the Tapi river since the afternoon has led to receding water level. As a precautionary measure, he said that some families, who feared that the water would enter their homes, shifted themselves to a nearby school.
The Bharuch collector said that the situation is being monitored continuously in the district and that incessant rains have hampered receding of water in the city.
"The water level on Golden Bridge which connects Bharuch with the industrial city of Ankleshwar touched 27.2 feet," Singh said.
