Families of road accident victims and NGOs working for road safety today urged the government to take initiatives to ensure road safety for all.

COLORS (Coalition for Road Safety) -- a group of Road safety NGOs, families of road accident victims from across India and school children today took out a peaceful march to Rajpath to mark a Day of remembrance for road accident victims and demand safe roads for all.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in the last 10 years, over 12 lakh people have been killed on Indian roads.

In 2014 alone, 1.4 lakh people, including 17,000 children were killed in road accidents across India.

"We wish to voice our concern about the increasing deaths or injuries of children on Indian roads while travelling to school. There should be appropriate enforcement of stringent laws, which ensures statues for child protection during commute and measures for parent accountability" said D K Dhingra, Principal, Guru Harkishan Public School.

Participants carried placards questioning the intent of government on bringing a strong road safety law.

"The road safety bill promised by the Government is yet to see the light of day. All we have seen is severe dilution to the proposed drafts with all road safety statutes missing from the latest version," said Piyush Tewari, Founder of SaveLIFE Foundation which is working in the field.
