A farmer was arrested on the charge of stubble burning here today.

Surjit Singh of Rampur Sunra village was arrested under Section 188 (disobedience of public servant's order) of IPC, police said.

He was later produced in a court that granted him bail, they said.

Stubble burning is punishable in Punjab with a maximum jail term of one month or a fine of Rs 200 or both.

Deputy Commissioner, Kapurthala, Jaskiran Singh said the administration has decided to book offenders to check the hazardous practice of stubble burning.

However, Surjit said since the technical/mechanised methods of managing the stubble were very costly, the burning of stubble was the only viable option left with the farmers.
