A farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan here, police said today.

Farmers' organization and family members of Sanwarmal, the deceased, claimed that he took the extreme step after his crops destroyed in an unseasonal rainfall and the district administration rejected the claim saying his crops suffered only ten per cent loss.

District Collector L N Soni said that as per the girdavari report, the loss to the farmer's crop was only ten per cent and he was not eligible for any kind of compensation.

Soni said that he was under debt and committed suicide on Tuesday probably due to this reason.

Kisan Sabha president Amra Ram said that the government was insensitive towards farmers issue and farmers like Sanwarmal were committing suicide due to the government's apathy.

He said the Sabha will hold a demonstration against the state government in front of the collectorate office tomorrow.
