A 37-year-old farmer was electrocuted after coming into contact with electric wire at his home in Yahiyapur village under Jhinjhana police station in Shamli district today, police said.

However, villagers claimed that Gurtar Singh had committed suicide due to alleged financial crisis. They were demanding to clear his debt and release land mortgaged for bank loan.

The Circle Officer Waseem Khan said the farmer died at his home after coming into contact with electrical wire.

Police were trying to pacify the enraged villagers, who were refusing to handover the body, he said.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened and extra police force has been deployed in the village in order to keep situation under control.
