A 28-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife and mother-in-law by drowning them in a canal here, police said today.

Police said that Amarik Singh of Khidkian village in Muktsar Sahib district killed his wife Kirandeep Kaur and her mother by pushing them into the Rajasthan feeder canal here, leading to them drowning.

The accused, who was married at Pucca Kalan village in Faridkot district some five years back, developed strained relations with his wife due to which she left him to return to her mother.

Singh yesterday went to Pucca Kalan yesterday where he is said to have offered to provide medical attention for his ailing wife, whereupon she and her mother Gurjit Kaur left with him on his motorcycle.

But he allegedly took both to Machaki Mal Singh village on the banks of the Rajasthan feeder canal and threw both into its waters.

Farmers working in the adjoining fields later pulled the bodies out from the canal.

Singh and his wife have a daughter from their marriage who was born three years back, police added.
