A 50-year-old farmer was allegedly murdered in the district by unknown persons while he was taking cattle for grazing, leading to protests in the area.

The incident took place yesterday when Kamal Khan was taking his cattle to graze in Llakhon-Ki-Dhani's open field area in Fatehgarh sub-division of the district.

Prima facie, it seems the old man was attacked with sticks and sharp-edged weapons by unknown assailants, they said.

Scores of villagers held protest yesterday night and today morning outside the Sitordaee police station demanding arrest of those involved in the murder, they said.

The mob was calmed down after police assured it that the culprits will be arrested soon.

An FIR has been lodged in this regard and two persons have been rounded up, they said, adding that the reason for the crime is not yet known.

Khan's body has been sent for postmortem.
