The price of top quality red gingelly is expected to be around Rs 7,500 to Rs 7,700 per quintal till May 2015 and with limited chance for increase further, farmers have been advised to sell their produce immediately upon harvest during the period.

The Agro Market Intelligence and Business Promotion Centre in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University analysed the prices prevailing for the last 15 years in Sivagiri Regulated Market in Tamil Nadu and arrived at the price level.

The ruling price for red gingelly is Rs 6,800 to Rs 8,000, it said in a release.

Erode district is the major Gingelly producer, with Karur, Thanjavur and Cuddalore contributing to the total production in Tamil Nadu, where gingelly is mainly grown as irrigated crop in December-January and harvested during March-May.

Oil producers in Tamil Nadu sourced gingelly from West Bengal at lesser price than the domestic price.
