The Jammu-Pathankot National Higway was blocked by farmers today at Vijaypur in Samba district demanding compensation for the damages suffered by them due to the recent flash floods.

Led by the Congress state general secretary and former minister Manjit Singh the farmers blocked the highway for one hour at Vijaypur as they demanded compensation for the damages.

The farmers claimed that the embankments on the Basanter and Devak rivers has been breached by the flash floods triggered by heavy rains and that the river water has entered their fields damaging the entire standing crops.

"The embankment was first damaged three years back due to floods. The previous government and present coalition has turned blind eyes towards the farmers who need relief and compensation from them," Manjit Singh said.

Singh alleged that neither the present government nor the previous regime took any steps to repair the damages caused in the embankment.
