Hundreds of farmers, led by Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait, took possession of their land at Sujuru village here, acquired by the government for constructing a waste treatment plant 18 years ago.

The government had acquired 350 bhigas of land from the farmers for Yamuna Pollution Jal Nigam unit in 1997 and promised to pay compensation but failed to do so, Tikait said.

In an act of defiance, the farmers reclaimed their land yesterday and planted wheat there.

The district administration is yet to intervene in the matter.
