A Congress member in Lok Sabha today pressed for honouring farmers who provided valuable contribution to the country's economy, with honorary doctorates.
"There are so many universities across the country which are providing innumerable doctorate (degrees)....The farmers who provide such rich contribution must also be awarded with honorary doctorates," S P Muddahanume Gowda said.
He was speaking in the House during the debate on Demand for Grants for the Agriculture Ministry.

Gowda also stressed that the government should increase the minimum support price (MSP) on copra should be increased.
"The MSP on copra is Rs 6,240, while around Rs 10,000 is spent to grow one quintal on copra," he said and wondered "how will the farmers survive."
He also expressed concern over the rising number of suicides in the last decade.
"In last 10 years, when you look at the rising number of suicides by the farmers, you will find that it is in the ascending order," he said.
