A group of farmers today staged protest outside the mini secretariat here, demanding proper compensation for their crops damaged in recent hailstorms and heavy rainfall.

The farmers, who assembled under the aegis of Akhil Bhartiya Kisan Mahasabha, alleged that the state government was mulling to provide them a paltry Rs 5,000 per acre compensation against their demand of Rs 25,000 per acre.

They also submitted a memorandum carrying a list of their demands to the Hisar Deputy Commissioner.

Mahasabha leader Surender Singh said the weather extremities have pushed the farmers on the verge of devastation, and asked the government to immediately implement the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission for improving the condition of Indian farmers.
