An 11-year-old girl has been beaten to death by her father in east China for copying her classmate's homework, police said today.

The father, a migrant worker surnamed Zhang from Zhejiang Province, yesterday ordered the girl to kneel down, tied her hands and beat her after he discovered that she had copied her classmate's homework multiple times.

He sent the girl to hospital when she stopped breathing, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The girl died today.

Physical punishment of children is common in China, especially in rural areas, as parents pin high hopes on their children's academic achievement.
