A resident of Ulhasnagar in the district and his 12-year-old son drowned after they jumped into a pond out of panic following a leakage in their boat, police said today.

The incident took place on Monday around 7.30 pm at the Titwala Boat Club, police said adding that five others in the boat were, however, rescued.

The bodies of the two victims- Narayandas Matreja (42) and his son Ajay were later fished out.

Members of two families from Ulhasnagar- the Lullas and Matrejas - visited the Titwala temple and then went for a boat ride at the club Monday evening.

However, they noticed that the boat had developed a crack and it was sinking. They immediately informed the boat club management which sent a rescue team. However, by then all the seven members jumped into the pond out of panic.

Inspector Suresh Patil of Titwala police said that a case would be registered against those responsible.
