Writer-activist Fatima Bhutto has come up with a new short story which is being released as a digital read.

"Democracy" lays bare the constant tussle between the military and everybody else in crisp military prose and with classic dry wit, publishers Penguin said.

Bhutto's story has been written exclusively for readers of digital content and is available as a download from online retailers.

"One lazy Karachi evening, Brigadier Azad is pre-occupied with thoughts of his mistress, when he is disturbed by the urgent news of a coup threatening the peace in Pakistan," says a blurb about the story, which is being released under Penguin Books' e-Singles format, which is a short, digital read.

Bhutto is the author of a book of poetry, two works of non-fiction and, most recently, the bestselling "Shadow of The Crescent Moon".
