Tragic teen romance 'The Fault In Our Stars' won the weekend box office battle by beating Tom Cruise starrer action drama 'Edge of Tomorrow' to the third place with an USD 48 million haul.

The film, starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as two cancer patients who fall in love, is the low-budget adaptation of John Green's bestseller of the same name, reported the Wrap.

The Fox film got a boost from many of novel's women fans who made a whopping 82 per cent of the audience, making it a surprise summer hit.

Last week's No 1, Angelina Jolie-starrer 'Maleficent', another movie that got a boost by a largely female audience, was pushed to the second spot with USD 33.8 million, toppling Cruise's sci-fi saga, which came third with USD 29.1 million over its first three days.

'Fault' was made on a budget of USD 12 million 'Edge of Tomorrow' cost nearly 180 million to Warner Bros and Village Roadshow.
