Maharashtra Minister Pankaja Munde today said a female police official will probe the case of 19 aborted female foetuses, found dumped in Sangli district.

The minister for women and child welfare met district officials in Sangli and termed the incident as "unfortunate."

She said the culprits will be brought to book and strict action will be taken against them.

The minister said the case will be handled by Deepali Kale, a doctor and a police official, from Sangli sub-division.

Munde said there was need to bring a change in society's mindset, which is still fixated with male child.

"Parents should not take away the right of the girl child to take birth," she added.

There is a need to undertake a massive awareness programme for which an exclusive machinery needs to be in place at the state and the Centre, said Munde adding she had spoken to Union Women and Child Welfare Minister Maneka Gandhi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

On March 5, 19 aborted female foetuses were found dumped near a stream at a village in Sangli district of western Maharashtra, police had said.

Probing the case of a pregnant woman's death during abortion, the police had reached the stream in Mhaisal village where it found the foetuses.

The minister also met the parents of the pregnant woman, who died during abortion.
