A 25-year-old female elephant
collapsed and died in the Anthiyur forest area near here today, officials said.
The elephant along with its calf had gone to the Varattupallam reservoir to consume water but it fell down and died due to some ailment, they said.
Forest officials are trying to scare the calf into the forests as it is refusing to leave its mother, forest department sources said.
