A 20-year-old female elephant died of dehydration on Friday despite efforts by the forest department to revive it at Mankarai on the city outskirts, officials said.
The villagers noticed the elephant lying in a farm, and informed forest department officials, who rushed there along with a veterinarian, police said.
A calf was standing near the elephant and officials provided treatment after driving away the little one to the jungle, they said.
The veterinarian and his team provided banana and jaggery to revive the elephant but it died after some time, they said.
Dehydration was said to be the cause of the death and carcass was taken for post-mortem, police added.
